Matthew Johnson
OWNER & FOUNDER · SWIFT PAINTING
Louisiana native, born & raised in Livingston Parish. Built Swift Painting from one $535 porch paint job at 15 into a trusted regional company.
“Every good story starts somewhere unexpected. Ours started over a plate of red beans and rice.”
Our founder, Matthew Johnson, is a Louisiana native — born and raised in Livingston Parish. When he was 15, he and his dad were having lunch at G&J's Drive-In when a family friend from church, Ms. Gerilyn Taylor, stopped by their table to say hello. She mentioned she needed her house painted and asked if they knew anyone who painted. Without missing a beat, his dad smiled, pointed straight at him, and said, “He does.” Matthew had never painted a house for money in his life — but trying to sound more confident than he felt, he said he'd come take a look. He charged $15 an hour and earned $535 on his very first job. At 15 years old, he thought he'd struck it rich.
What surprised him most wasn't the money — it was how rewarding it felt to take something worn out and make it beautiful again, and to see the joy that brought a homeowner.
That one conversation planted a seed. Then, in 2016, the Great Flood hit South Louisiana. Matthew — 18 at the time, with his own brother-in-law's home among those flooded — watched his community come together during one of the hardest seasons in its history. He printed a handful of business cards with nothing but his name and phone number and started walking flooded neighborhoods, offering to help anyone who needed their home painted. He wasn't trying to build a company. He was just trying to help. He painted eight homes that season, on his own.
Those projects changed his life. He enrolled at Baton Rouge Community College, made it one semester, and knew his path was somewhere else. He left school to paint full-time, and Swift Painting was born.
Over the past decade, that small beginning has grown into a local company built the same way it started — on relationships, trust, and craftsmanship. A lot of our customers aren't just clients. They're friends, neighbors, family members, and referrals from people who invited us back or told someone they loved about us. That's always been the greatest compliment we could receive.
